Questions about pricing

Why is Capo a subscription?

Because the work on Capo never stops. Apple changes macOS and iOS every year and introduces new hardware all the time, and Capo keeps up with their schedule while also improving what's there and building new features of its own.

We also do our best to stay on top of customer support email, with actual humans (usually the developer) reading and answering your questions and feedback.

A subscription pays for all of this work as it happens. If recurring payments simply don't work for you and you're on the Mac, consider a retail copy instead.

On the Mac, should I subscribe or buy a retail copy?

Subscribe if you'd rather set it and forget it. You're always on the latest version, and when you get a new Mac, update macOS or restore from a backup, Capo comes right back from the App Store without a second thought.

Buy a retail copy if you'd rather upgrade on your own schedule: a studio Mac where nothing changes without your say-so, or just a pay-once approach to software. You install updates when you choose, and pay for the next major version only if you want it.

Is there a free trial?

Yes, the Free Edition. Many subscription apps give you a 7- or 14-day free trial that expires and turns into a paid subscription. Capo doesn't ask you to commit to anything before you start. The Free Edition is a song-learning tool you can use for as long as you like before you decide whether to buy.

How do I cancel?

Cancel in your Apple Account's subscription settings, on any of your devices. You keep everything until the end of the period you've paid for. Apple's guide ›

What happens if my subscription ends?

Capo goes back to the Free Edition, so it stops saving your new edits and exporting audio. But it won't leave you stranded: your projects still open, with all your work intact.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, not by us. You can request one from Apple's Report a Problem page.

I bought Capo before it was a subscription. Do I get a discount?

Yes. You get a discount on every subscription plan, and Capo shows your price when you subscribe. More about subscriptions for longtime customers ›

Can I switch from Pro to Platinum?

Yes. Change your plan in Apple's subscription settings, and Apple credits the unused part of your Pro subscription.

Can my family use my subscription?

Yes. A subscription covers everyone on your Family Sharing plan, at no extra cost.

Does a retail copy work on iPhone or iPad?

No. Capo Pro 4 from a retailer is for the Mac only, and it runs its own download of Capo, not the App Store version.

How does the retail purchase work?

After you buy it, you get a redemption code and instructions for downloading Capo Pro 4 and unlocking your copy with the code.

The code and instructions usually arrive electronically, but some stores may print them on your receipt if you buy in person.

Does the retail copy work with iCloud?

Yes. Projects you save in iCloud Drive sync to your other devices, and you can open them in the Free Edition on iPhone and iPad.

Can I give Capo as a gift?

App Store subscriptions can't be given as gifts, unfortunately. But a retail copy of Capo Pro 4 makes a good gift for a Mac user: when you buy from a retailer, just forward the redemption code and instructions you receive to the person you're giving it to.

Is there an educational discount?

There's no standard education price, but if you'd like the full version of Capo for a group of teachers or students, let's talk. We're open to working out an arrangement that fits. Get in touch ›
