Waterloo, ON - June 4, 2026. Today SuperMegaUltraGroovy released Capo 4.7, a significant update to its award-winning software that helps musicians learn to play songs by ear on macOS and iOS. The release introduces publication-quality lead sheets on the Mac, a new Call & Response practice mode inspired by the company's research into ear learning, and a completely rebuilt, searchable User Guide covering both platforms.
"Capo has always helped you figure out a song by ear," says Chris Liscio, SuperMegaUltraGroovy's founder and lead developer. "With this release, it can also help you share what you've learned with the other people you play and study with."
Professional, Publication-Quality Lead Sheets
The headline feature of Capo 4.7, available on macOS, lets users turn the chords and sections in a project into a high-quality printed lead sheet. Once a song is ready, choosing File > Print… opens a panel where users add a title and subheadings and decide whether to include the chord vocabulary. From there it works just like printing in any other Mac app, and the finished sheet can be printed or exported as a PDF.
"Many of you asked for this, and we're happy it's finally here," says Liscio. "Take the sheet to band practice, or hand one to your students to learn at home."
Call & Response Mode
Capo 4.7 introduces Call & Response mode on both macOS and iOS, a new way to play looping regions that alternates between the recording—the "call"—and a quiet period—the "response"—that gives the musician a built-in gap to play back what they just heard. Users enable it by long-pressing the loop button while a region is selected, and the quiet part can be configured to play anywhere from silent to 50% of the original volume.
The feature grew directly out of Liscio's research into how musicians learn by ear. During the quiet period, musicians can rehearse the melody or solo in their mind and test their sense of time against the original. On the Mac, the mode also works in the Tabbing song view, playing back a user's note entries during the quiet period to confirm them against memory.
"When you play the part yourself during the quiet period, you're comparing what you hear against your memory rather than the recording—this is much less distracting than trying to listen for the recording at the same time you're listening to your own playing," says Liscio. "Judging your playing without the recording is going to help you develop a critical ear for what sounds right."
A New, Searchable User Guide
Capo 4.7 ships alongside a completely new online User Guide that covers both the macOS and iOS versions in one place and adds a search feature. "I'm trying to be mindful about where I put different kinds of content," says Liscio, "and I'd love to hear feedback from users as the guide continues to grow."
Enhancements and Fixes
The update also brings a number of improvements gathered from user feedback. The metronome can now be configured to click only during the count-in, count-in works anywhere in a song without requiring an active region, and starting within a bar produces fewer count-in beats. Users can now edit note entries without deactivating an active looping region—a natural complement to Call & Response mode. Exported MIDI files now correctly apply the project's transposition settings, metronome timing has been tightened, and previously configured custom tunings now appear in the Chords song view settings, alongside a collection of smaller user-interface fixes.
Availability and Pricing
Capo 4.7 is available today as a free update for all existing Capo users, and can be downloaded from the Mac App Store and the App Store. The macOS version requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, and the iOS version requires iOS 17 or later. To unlock full editing capabilities, including the Structure and Chords song views and the new lead sheet printing, an active subscription is required. Subscriptions start at $39.99 yearly for macOS-only use and $49.99 yearly for cross-platform (macOS and iOS) use. Prices are in US dollars and may vary by region.
