Waterloo, ON - October 10, 2025. Today SuperMegaUltraGroovy released Capo 4.6, a significant update to its award-winning music learning software for macOS. This release introduces a redesigned interface featuring native macOS toolbars, per-view toolbar customization, and an all-new app icon optimized for macOS Tahoe's Liquid Glass design language.
"Apple's introduction of Liquid Glass gave us the perfect opportunity to revisit Capo's interface and make it feel more at home on the Mac," says Chris Liscio, SuperMegaUltraGroovy's founder and lead developer. "We've replaced the Control Strip with native macOS toolbars that users can customize to fit their workflow."
Goodbye, Control Strip. Hello, Toolbar!
Capo 4.6 moves all controls from the Control Strip—originally introduced in 2018—to a standard macOS toolbar. The new design allows users to right-click and customize the toolbar layout, rearranging controls to match their preferences.
"The Control Strip solved an important problem for Capo touch on iOS," says Liscio, "but macOS toolbars have evolved significantly over the years. Features like visual grouping of side-by-side controls and per-view customization made this the right time to embrace a more native Mac experience."
Each of Capo's song views—Practice, Tabbing, Structure, and Chords—maintains its own toolbar configuration. This ensures that users only see controls relevant to their current task. For example, beat grid editing controls appear in the Structure view where they're needed, but don't clutter the Tabbing view where they serve no purpose.
New Icon, New Polish
Capo 4.6 introduces a refreshed app icon built with Apple's new Icon Composer. The updated design supports all of macOS Tahoe's icon styles—including light, dark, glass, and tinted variations—while featuring more vibrant colors than its predecessor.
"We were ahead of the curve in 2020 with our glassy icon design," Liscio notes, "but this was a chance to refine it and ensure it works beautifully across all of Tahoe's customization options."
Enhanced Performance and New Features
Beyond visual updates, Capo 4.6 brings performance improvements including better scrolling behavior and reduced CPU usage during playback at song boundaries. The app now better reflects custom color themes set in System Appearance Settings.
The update also introduces dedicated toolbar access to the Audio Freezer. While Capo has long allowed users to "freeze" audio by holding the playhead still during scrubbing, the new Freezer toggle makes this powerful feature more discoverable and easier to use. By sustaining a single moment of audio playback, musicians can hear a reference pitch while searching for notes on their instrument—particularly valuable for wind instrument players or those who have difficulty humming or whistling reference pitches.
Availability and Pricing
Capo 4.6 is available today as a free update for all existing Capo users. The app can be downloaded from the Mac App Store and requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. To unlock full editing capabilities including the Structure and Chords song views, an active subscription is required. Subscriptions start at $39.99 yearly for macOS-only use and $49.99 yearly for cross-platform (macOS and iOS) use. Prices are in US dollars and may vary by region.
