iBook Upgrade

• Chris Liscio

When I planned to buy a laptop for FuzzMeasure development, I did not have much money to spend on it. I dreamed for a PowerBook, but I just could not afford it. At the time, the PowerBook only led the iBook in bus speed, graphics card, and a few MHz (1.25 versus 1.33 — no big difference).

In the end, my finances only allowed me to go the iBook route. I did not mind too much, since I decided that later on I would upgrade the iBook to perform comparatively to the PowerBook. I bumped the RAM (on my own) to 768MB and everything went fast enough to hold me over.

I spent some time the last few days trying to figure out what to upgrade on the iBook, and shopping for decent prices (and places that carried stock). It looks like the iBook will become quite the screamer after this extreme makeover. :)

Gonzo (the iBook) will receive an 80GB 5400RPM drive and a 1GB SODIMM to give a total of 1.25GB of system RAM. Compiles should go much quicker, and so should running FuzzMeasure in the debugger. We'll see how it goes.
