Tough Going

• Chris Liscio

The last few days have been…interesting. In an attempt to get FuzzMeasure up to snuff for the professional audio market, I decided to get myself an audio device. Recently, I mentioned I wanted the Edirol FA-66. In fact, I stated it was my "dream device". Boy was I wrong…

A few weeks ago, I put my name on an FA-66 at my local music store, and was told I should have had it last week. I later found out that nobody seems to be able to get their grubby hands on these devices.

After playing the "for a few bucks more…" game, I ended up looking seriously at the Presonus Firepod. I didn't want to fork over that much cash, and the unit was far too big to carry around in my backpack with my laptop. After some serious research, and finding a local store that had some FireWire audio devices in stock, I ended up with the M-Audio FireWire 1814. It was considerably cheaper than the Firepod at my local store, and had more inputs and outputs to muck with. Also, the option was there for 192kHz, which I wanted to verify FuzzMeasure with.

Sure enough, there are still a few issues with their drivers, but as long as I stay away from 192kHz, I should be good. My code now appears to work with multi-channel devices, and I plan to add some features to allow users to select multiple record channels.

Speaking of 192kHz, I got a loopback measurement done of the 1814. This device is reasonably flat to well beyond 80kHz! I'm very impressed with the quality of this device so far, and I can always add another 8 mic preamps (using the ADAT lightpipe interface) by buying an M-Audio Octane later on. I don't see myself requiring that many preamps any time soon…

On top of fighting with multi-channel device code, piggy's network cards have been on the fritz, and I have some RAM to add to get piggy sped up and ready for my launch. FogBugz 4.0 is much happier with more RAM, and I plan to rely heavily on the built-in forum after the launch.

Updates will probably be sparse for the next little while, as I will be dedicating everything to completing the release candidate. I'm planning to put 1.2b4 out in the next 2 days or so, and focus hard on 1.2b5/1.2rc0. Keep your eyes open for that. I will try to expand the beta's reach a little bit more with 1.2b4, too.

Alright. I'll shut up for now. I promise…
