Silly Best Buy

I don't think it's a secret that I'm looking to get a second machine. Ever since I started working more seriously on FuzzMeasure in September, Shelley has not had enough time to work on the things she needs to get done on the computer. (Our photos for the last few months are not organized, and our expense tracking spreadsheets are out of date).

Since we are going to be travelling to Denver over the holidays, and I just happen to enjoy laptops, I think we're settled on an iBook G4. It's almost half the price of what I paid for my iBook G3 in February 2003, and probably 10x as fast. Since it's getting close to Christmas, apparently coming by one of these machines in person is going to be a challenge.

I decided to look into saving some cash and grabbing a discounted iBook G4 1.0GHz (the newly introduced iBooks are 1.2Ghz) from Best Buy. It's hard to find a 12" model in stock, so I figured I could spend slightly more than the new 12" model, and maybe score a 14" model for a few hundred cheaper than the new 14". I couldn't remember correctly, and thought that the 14" models came with Airport Extreme by default.

When I asked the guy at Best Buy if the iBook G4 14" came with wireless, he said it definitely did. I was pretty excited at this point, but he ended my excitement when he said that in fact, all the Apple laptops they had came with Airport. I knew that the iBook G4 12" did not, and asked him to verify on the 14". He was, after all, the "Apple expert" at my local Best Buy. He went away for about 2 minutes, and came back.

Him: "Yes, sir. I have the box in my hands now, and it certainly has wireless."

Me: "Excellent. So, there is something on the box that says 'Airport Extreme'?"

Him: "Uh-huh. It says 'Airport Extreme Ready' right on the box. That means it has wireless"

Me: "Uhh. OK. Bye."

"Airport Extreme Ready" is not the same as "Airport Extreme Built-In". I wonder how many people returned their iBooks to Best Buy claiming their wireless doesn't work…
