A productive weekend...

This weekend was very successful in terms of the work that was put into my app. I've changed focus slightly in my approach to the applications I will release (yes, there will be a few rather than one), so the first release is starting to feel closer.

My thinking is that in order to release things earlier, and get the fruits of my labour out to the starving (?) public, I should release my gargantuan application in pieces (as a suite). One benefit is that they will each serve a specific purpose, and will be able to help more than just loudspeaker designers.

For example, to release an entire loudspeaker design application with such a high-quality MLS-based impulse response engine would be a shame if all it did was allow for the measurement of Thiele-Small parameters. With this functionality, one can measure their loudspeakers, test filters, measure room responses, and far more!

As a result, my MLS measurement system will be released on its own, and I will improve it as best I can as features are requested and (gasp!) bugs are found. While that application is being used, I can work on the other pieces of the loudspeaker design puzzle. All of my applications will read (and write) a simple file format that is usable by other solutions out there. I am thinking of a few right now, but haven't decided on anything solid yet.

The benefit of keeping my file format open is that my users will be able to use existing software solutions to do more with the resultant measurements while I am building the other pieces of the suite. Furthermore, if they choose not to use my other software components, they will not be left out in the cold. People enjoy choice, and flexibility.

Furthermore, there are some software packages out there that I just can't compete with in terms of analysis options. As an example, if someone has a copy of MATLAB, there is no way I can come close to the analysis possibilities (nor do I have the time to try). I will make absolutely sure that my application can output files that are usable in popular packages like that.

Hopefully, by releasing my application early, I will be able to gauge further if there is a lot of interest in this type of application suite. If nobody seems to be starving for more loudspeaker solutions on the Mac, I will try to focus as much as I can towards making my MLS measurement system as strong as possible. My personal interests revolve around computers and audio, and thus I will do whatever I can to release software that acts in this domain.
