Calculating costs

• Chris Liscio

After the past weekend, the "hours counter" is up to 37. This is measured in terms of productive hours, and not just the hours I've simply set aside to work. Unfortunately, the first 12 or so hours are purely an estimate, and that's a generous one at that.

From the time I started working on the project more seriously, I'm taking between 50 and 75% of the time I have set aside to calculate productive hours, and to also hopefully eliminate some of the time used to physically (or electronically) find out how to accomplish the required tasks.

Using the productive hours I've calculated, I can approximate the value of the R&D that I'm putting into this product. So far I'm pretty surprised how much this is "costing", and that isn't even taking into account monies spent for test hardware, etc.

Certainly using these metrics, I can more accurately gauge what this project is worth, and how much money I will need to make back in order to count it as a success, and hopefully finance further development and more advanced features.

I should probably track this more effectively using OmniOutliner or something, so I don't have to guess so much in the future. :)
