(Yet Another) New Toy

I took the plunge yesterday and began selling off my old desktop PC. My reasons are quite simple.

Getting an LCD was something I had intended to do for a long time. I was quite spoiled when I had an LCD display on my iBook, and going back to long bouts of time on my CRT was starting to get to me. Besides, even my dad had an LCD monitor at his office, and had been contemplating an upgrade for that! Clearly I was behind the times. :)

When shopping out LCDs, I was originally under the impression that Apple's offerings were quite a bit more expensive. Little did I realize, LCD manufacturers seem to be charging quite a premium for using a digital DVI (rather than analog VGA) connector. Looking into the pricing further, the difference between other panels and Apple's panels wasn't so great when you were considering a DVI panel.

This pricing seems silly to me considering there's an analog-to-digital conversion in the LCD panel that is now skipped. I guess the laws of supply and demand are at work here, and things should change in due time. Either that, or the cost of DVI connectors is far more than the price of a 15 pin D-SUB connector and an ADC. :)

Anyway, rather than paying the premium for a DVI converter, I decided to give the premium to Apple for giving me a more aesthetically pleasing display, and not adding to the octopus that lives under my desk (power, USB, and display all sent through a single cable).

On top of the fact that the display is really crisp, I am happy I can now move the monitor much farther away from my face. I like to keep it around arm's length, which allows my eyes to relax a bit more and not move around so much.

Now my hours spent in front of the computer developing will be far less painful. Yay for me. Hopefully I'll have something to offer the world shortly. There are at least two projects in the works now that may see the light of day in beta-form in the next few weeks.
